15 Haitian Migrants Repatriated by US Coast Guard

While undocumented migration into the US is not a new trend, there has been an increase of Haitian migrants since the devastating earthquake earlier in the year. In what can be described as somewhat routine now, the coastguard repatriated 15 Haitian migrants early last week from a stranded vessel approximately 15 miles off the Florida coast.

The migrants were said to all be in healthy condition and were given food and water once brought aboard the coastguard ship before being returned to Haiti.

The suspected smuggler and a Jamaican migrant also on the boat were taken into custody.

Due to the risky nature of human smuggling and the great potential for loss of life the Coast Guard has redoubled their efforts to curtail this practice to both keep the borders safe as well as to try and deter potential smugglers from engaging in the practice to begin with.
